Mount Oldonyo Lengai

MOUNT OLDONYO LENGAI OVERVIEW

Ol Doinyo Lengai, standing at 2,960 meters (9,711 feet), is a unique and fascinating volcano in Northern Tanzania, just south of Lake Natron. It is the only volcano in the world that sometimes erupts natrocarbonatite lava, which is highly fluid and much cooler than typical silicon-based lavas. This type of lava flows like water, turns white upon contact with moisture, and glows orange at night. During the day, it resembles black oil or brown foam, depending on its gas content. The volcano experiences phases of explosive activity, where lava composition includes more silicate material, reducing its fluidity and resulting in ash eruptions and lava bombs. Notable eruptions occurred in 1966-1967 and 2007-2008, featuring open lava pools and fountains. The volcano’s unique eruptions are influenced by its internal plumbing and gas content, though the exact mechanisms remain poorly understood. This intriguing behavior makes Ol Doinyo Lengai a subject of ongoing scientific interest.
